Autumn Leaf
Today I went on a little walk through
Hamilton. I just wanted to show you a few pictures since it was a really
beautiful day! Yesterday I was fortunate to be invited to the WINTEC (Waikato
Institute of Technology College) Homestay Dinner. Homestay families and their
foreign exchange students (example: me and a lot of Chinese students) were
given a traditional Maori (native) dinner called a Hangi, and aperformance
by the Kapa Haka Maori youth dance group. Below are some internet videos
that I found to show you the Kapa Haka dance:
The Hangi meal is described by good ol'
Wikipedia below:
Hāngi (Māori pronunciation: [ˈhaːŋi]) is a traditional New Zealand Māori method of cooking food using heated rocks buried in a pit oven still used for special occasions.
To "lay a hāngi" or "put down a hāngi" involves digging a pit in the ground, heating stones in the pit with a large fire, placing baskets of foodon top of the stones, and covering everything with earth for several hours before uncovering (or lifting) the hāngi.
Sorry to be so short, but I've got to get going to the WINTEC school now to meet up with my homestay mum Susan. Hopefully I can catch up with everyone again on the weekend :)
Bye for now!

Hi Karen,
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like your Hangi experience is like one I had in the outback of Australia years ago. The food was wichetty grubs (moth larvae). Yum.
Winston has been missing you but is getting back to his regular self the last day or so.
They are sure keeping you busy. Do you know where you'll be working yet?
Hugs,
Kathi
